The sacrament of marriage is a visible sign of God’s love for the Church. When a man and a woman are married in the Church, they receive the grace needed for a lifelong bond of unity. There is also certain paperwork to be completed. For Catholic(s), a Baptismal Certificate issued within six months of the wedding date must be provided. Those who are Baptized Non-Catholics will need to provide evidence of their baptism in the form of a Baptismal Certificate or other such document provided at the time of their baptism. Marriage is a CovenantThe Sacrament of Marriage is a covenantal union in the image of the covenants between God and his people with Abraham and later with Moses at Mt. Sinai. This divine covenant can never be broken. In this way, marriage is a union that bonds spouses together during their entire lifetime. The sacrament of Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and the Church. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved his Church; the grace of the sacrament thus perfects the human love of the spouses, strengthens their indissoluble unity, and sanctifies them on the way to eternal life. (CCC 1661) The love in a married relationship is exemplified in the total gift of one’s self to another. It’s this self-giving and self-sacrificing love that we see in our other model of marriage, the relationship between Christ and the Church. Marriage is based on the consent of the contracting parties, that is, on their will to give themselves, each to the other, mutually and definitively, in order to live a covenant of faithful and fruitful love. (CCC 1662) The Church takes the lifelong nature of the Sacrament of Marriage seriously. The Church teaches that a break in this covenant teachings goes against the natural law of God. The remarriage of persons divorced from a living, lawful spouse contravenes the plan and law of God as taught by Christ. They are not separated from the Church, but they cannot receive Eucharistic communion. They will lead Christian lives especially by educating their children in the faith. (CCC 1665) Marriage Reflects the Holy TrinityWe believe that God exists in eternal communion. Together, Father, Son and Holy Spirit are united in one being with no beginning and no end. Human beings, likewise, were created by God in God’s image for the purpose of communion with another human being The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “The Christian family is a communion of persons, a sign and image of the communion of the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit” (CCC 2205). The Sacrament of Marriage is “unitive, indissoluble and calls us to be completely open to fertility.” Christian marriage at its finest is a reflection of God’s self-giving love expressed between the love of two people. |

El matrimonio es una alianzaEl sacramento del matrimonio es una unión pactada a imagen de las alianzas entre Dios y su pueblo con Abraham y más tarde con Moisés en el monte Sinaí. Esta alianza divina no puede romperse jamás. De este modo, el matrimonio es una unión que une a los cónyuges durante toda su vida. El sacramento del Matrimonio significa la unión de Cristo y la Iglesia. Da a los esposos la gracia de amarse con el amor con que Cristo ha amado a su Iglesia; la gracia del sacramento perfecciona así el amor humano de los esposos, refuerza su unidad indisoluble y los santifica en el camino hacia la vida eterna. (CIC 1661) El amor en una relación matrimonial se ejemplifica en la entrega total de uno mismo al otro. Este amor de entrega y sacrificio es el que vemos en nuestro otro modelo de matrimonio, la relación entre Cristo y la Iglesia. El matrimonio se basa en el consentimiento de los contrayentes, es decir, en su voluntad de entregarse, cada uno al otro, mutua y definitivamente, para vivir una alianza de amor fiel y fecunda. (CIC 1662) La Iglesia se toma muy en serio el carácter vitalicio del sacramento del matrimonio. La Iglesia enseña que la ruptura de esta alianza va contra la ley natural de Dios. El nuevo matrimonio de las personas divorciadas de un cónyuge vivo y legítimo contraviene el plan y la ley de Dios enseñados por Cristo. No están separados de la Iglesia, pero no pueden recibir la comunión eucarística. Llevarán una vida cristiana, especialmente educando a sus hijos en la fe. (CIC 1665) El matrimonio refleja la Santísima TrinidadCreemos que Dios existe en comunión eterna. Juntos, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo están unidos en un solo ser sin principio ni fin. Los seres humanos, asimismo, fueron creados por Dios a su imagen y semejanza con el propósito de la comunión con otro ser humano. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica afirma: "La familia cristiana es comunión de personas, signo e imagen de la comunión del Padre y del Hijo en el Espíritu Santo" (CIC 2205). El sacramento del matrimonio es "unitivo, indisoluble y nos llama a estar completamente abiertos a la fecundidad". El matrimonio cristiano en su máxima expresión es un reflejo del amor oblativo de Dios expresado entre el amor de dos personas. |
